Countdown to renew the contract? Doncic officially announces its latest itinerary: will appear in Los Angeles on August 4
On July 28, Lakers star Doncic updated his social media and posted his latest itinerary, and wrote: "New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, look forward to meeting you!"
Doncic's trip is to participate in the Jordan brand event. He will appear in New York on July 30 (the same below), participate in the event in Chicago on August 2, and on August 4, he will come to Los Angeles. Lakers reporter Dave McMenamin forwarded Doncic's itinerary and said that the Lakers are eligible to provide Doncic with a contract renewal of more than $220 million for up to four years on Saturday local time.
Previously, the outside world generally expected Doncic to complete a contract renewal with the Lakers and stay in this team for a long time. Especially this summer, he recruited Ayton and Smart for the Lakers, which further reflects his determination to stay in the Lakers to play. According to reports from salary experts, Doncic is the first to be eligible to renew his contract on August 3, and he can sign up to a four-year, $223 million contract extension. Of course, he can also choose a short-term contract, so that once he reaches 10 years of NBA age in the summer of 2028, he is eligible for a maximum salary of 35% of the salary cap.
If he abandons the player option in 2026 and signs a three-year, $161 million contract with the Lakers that includes the 2028-29 season player option, he will become a 10-year veteran by the summer of 2028. By then, he can renew a sky-high contract with the Lakers with a total value of about $406 million in five years.
Previously, some reporters speculated that Doncic had a strong motivation to become a full free agent in 2028, rather than renewing the contract again. If he stayed with the Lakers until then, he would have been 8 years old and played for the same team for four years (including some seasons like the 2024-25 season). This will allow him to add a deal veto to a new contract in 2028, thus avoiding the recurrence of his sudden transaction.
