Honorary Doctor, King James wins off-court achievements again, and sports charity wins both
On May 21, according to local media in Cleveland, basketball legend LeBron James may receive a major honor - Ohio State University plans to award him an honorary doctorate.
This news instantly sparked heated discussions in the sports and education circles, and many fans and netizens sent their blessings to James. The Ohio State University board of directors will hold a vote this Wednesday. If the vote is passed, James will become one of the few professional athletes in the school's history to receive this honor, and will be ranked among the outstanding awards along with former presidents such as Obama and Bush.
According to the Ohio State University Council, honorary degrees are only awarded to outstanding people who “contribute far exceeds expected standards in the professional field”, and James is the only nominated honorary degree candidate for the school this year.
There are only a handful of professional athletes on the previous star-studded award list, and James' nomination this time is undoubtedly particularly eye-catching.
LeBron James' achievements in basketball have attracted worldwide attention.
He has won many championships, regular season MVP and other honors in the NBA field. With his outstanding skills and leadership skills, he has become a legend in basketball history. He not only improved the competitive level of basketball, but also attracted countless young people to participate in the basketball career with his own influence.
James never stepped onto the university campus - in 2003, he entered the NBA directly from St. Vincent St. Mary High School as the "Son of Chosen".
But in his 22-year career, he has always maintained close ties with Ohio State University and repeatedly stated that "if he chose a university in that year, it would be Ohio State." Now, this "regret" will be made up.
The school's council emphasized that James not only achieved remarkable achievements in the field of basketball (4 championships + 4MVP + historical scoring champion), but also built the most influential community assistance system in the United States in Akron through the I PROMISE School and Family Foundation, benefiting more than 1,600 students.
The honorary degree from Ohio State University has always been awarded to leaders in the political, business and academic circles, and there are few professional athletes. There are three key factors for James to join this ranks:
Basketball Legend: The only "40,000+10,000+10,000" in NBA history, 20 All-Stars, and 4-time champion;
Charity Revolution: I PROMISE plans to provide free education, meals and even housing, and was rated as "the most innovative public welfare project in the United States" by "Time";
Hometown Complex: Despite playing for many years in the Lakers, James has always regarded Akron as the "root", and has donated more than 200 million US dollars to Ohio.
If finally approved, James will attend the award ceremony in June. For the latter, this doctoral hat may be no less meaning than the championship ring.
