Let Luo implement Love s tactics. What tactics did Lue bring to the Clippers from the Cavaliers?
"I went back to the days when I was coaching in Cleveland and used Channing Frye and Kevin Love. I am very familiar with many tactics, and he (Lolo) is now adapting to these tactics." In a recent interview, Director Lu said.
If you read my latest Dalian preseason observation, you must be impressed by the following tactical round:
The name of this tactic is called "Elbow Quick".
When I saw Da Luo executing this tactic, the image of the Cavaliers asking Love to execute this tactic immediately came to my mind, so I specifically mentioned it during the review on the spot: "This is the tactic that Director Lu brought over from the Cavaliers."
It becomes even more interesting when combined with interviews. Obviously, Director Lu's statement in the interview: "Let Luo adapt to Love's tactics" was not just talk.
Let us go back to Lu’s coaching period with the Cavaliers and look at the case of the Cavaliers implementing this tactic in the 16-17 season.
The three strong sides cooperate to launch the "Elbow Quick" tactic:
The defender holds the ball across half court and hands it to the [dealer] at the elbow, and then quickly cuts to the bottom corner next to the [terminator] to set a screen for him. The [terminator] can choose to cut to the basket or get a three-point opportunity based on the screen angle of the [screener]. The screener can also bounce outside the three-point line after completing the screen to potentially get a three-point opportunity.
Director Lu asked James to deal the cards in this tactic when he was with the Cavaliers, but now with the Clippers, he still lets James deal the cards.
However, Coach Lu did not just start using this tactic with the Clippers this season.
As early as his first season as head coach of the Clippers, there were cases of continuing to use this tactic. For example, in this round of the 20-21 season:
Another example is the 23-24 season, this tactical design case similar to "Elbow Quick", the difference is:
designed a baseline starting hand for [the dealer] to use a "zip screen" to catch the ball, and changed the position of the [dealer] to near the elbow area on the other side, making the space on the side without the ball wider.
It is not difficult to see from the above two cases of the Clippers that Leonard is the player in the Clippers who frequently performs this tactic as an [end point].
But he didn’t start implementing this tactic only after joining the Clippers and under the coaching of Tyronn Lue. This also leads to an interesting "branch line" - Card: "I used this tactic in the Raptors."
Interestingly, the 76ers also used this tactic last season.
Like the 19 Raptors, let the center (Gabriel, Embiid) deal the cards. They played the same variation as the "23-24 Clippers Case" mentioned above, arranging the dealer's position in another elbow area, providing a wider space for two-on-two on the off-ball side.
Another detail here is that since Oubre and Martin are both non-space points, Nurse arranged for Martin to do a "Pin Down" for Oubre in order to attract the defender's attention as much as possible and prevent them from helping to interfere with George's cut.
We can quickly discover the connection between the above: the Cavaliers and Clippers are both teams under Lu's guidance; the Raptors and 76ers are both teams under coach Nick Nurse. After starting a new coaching career, they also brought their previous tactics to the team they currently coach and use them.
For Lu, this is a tactic he started using many years ago.
Over the years, they have developed many variants. For example, in the 23-24 season, some shadows of "Elbow Quick" can be seen in this tactic commonly used by the Clippers:
Take "Elbow Quick" as an example for comparison:
The difference is:
1. From the original 3 people to 4 people, it increases the sense of participation of other players.
2. The positions of the dealer and the center are interchanged, which not only increases the center's sense of participation, but also adds a screener. The initiator of the "Chin Cut" is the cutter holding the ball across half court. At the same time, the dealer will use the center's "Zip Screen" on the baseline to reach the elbow area (usually the right side) of the other side of the three-man team without the ball (usually the left side of the court). The player on the right elbow area changes from the center to the dealer. The dealer has the ball in hand, which makes the player on the right elbow area more restrained.
3. The center sets the "Zip Screen" for the dealer and then quickly sets the "Back Screen" for the cutter, which enriches the starting hand and changes the tactical starting hand to "Chin Cut".
4. It increases the richness of tactics and gives the terminator more options. The terminator can use the cutter's "Flex Screen" to cut into the basket or form a defense switch, or the center can use the center's "Pin Down" (lower screen) to get a finishing opportunity.
The period when this tactic appeared most frequently was when Harden first joined the Clippers.
Tylen Lue's idea is not difficult to guess:
wants to involve as many players as possible in the offense through complex tactical links. The idea is very good. Ideally, there are many parts of this tactic that can form a design that directly ends the opportunity, and it is both false and true.
However, the effect at the execution level was not so ideal. At that time, this tactic was launched too frequently and was mechanized and rigid with few changes.
For example, the "Chin Cut" of the air cutter has always been a feint attack. The air cutter rarely gets a direct finishing opportunity, and Leonard frequently uses Zubac's side to cover, making the tactical route easy to predict..
Of course, there is also the factor that the players need to get in touch with each other when the trade happened, and they can only practice through games.
So in the mid-season championship between the Clippers and the Nuggets in the 23-24 season, there was a particularly interesting detail, that is, the Nuggets and Aaron Gordon saw through the Clippers' tactics:
In the following round, Aaron Gordon saw through the Clippers' tactics and predicted that Leonard was going to use Zubac's "Pin Down" cover, so he adjusted his position and turned to face the baseline to block Leonard's upward path.
Leonard had no choice but to borrow George's "Flex Screen", which also unlocked another route to this tactic. Generally speaking, when Leonard moves to the "Flex Screen" side, there is a chance that the opponent will miscommunicate and gain a chance to score at the basket. However, Pope and Gordon's defense switch did not allow Leonard to get a chance. It seems that he was prepared for it. Pope switched to Leonard and then moved forward and got stuck in the plate. This also made Leonard less comfortable to receive the ball, which ultimately resulted in a misplaced singles play.
Although the Nuggets executed almost perfectly for most of the first part of this defensive round, at the end of this round Porter rashly attacked, and Leonard quickly released the ball, allowing Harden to get an open three-point opportunity.
