The third person in the history of the Thunder! Alexander was elected as the regular season MVP: International stars achieve seven consecutive dominances

Basketball

On May 22, famous reporter Shams reported that the 2024-25 regular season MVP belongs to Thunder star Alexander. He defeated Jokic and Antetokounmpo and won the award for the first time in his career. Starting from the 2022-23 season, the NBA named the trophy the Michael Jordan Award.

26-year-old Alexander averaged 32.7 points, 5 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game in the regular season this season. Including Alexander, the regular season MVPs in the past seven years are all players born outside the United States. The last time a local American player won this award was Harden in the 2017-18 season.

Alexander won 60+ wins in a single season and became the scoring leader, joining the "elite club" in NBA history. This achievement (scoring champions in the same season and 60+ wins) has been around 10 times in NBA history, and the only time that it did not accompany the MVP was in the 1996-97 season when the Jazz's Carl Malone defeated Jordan and won the award. This is Alexander's third consecutive season of scoring at least 30 points and shooting more than 50% from the field. Players who have done this before - Jabbar, Antetokounmpo, Chamberlain and Jordan - have won MVPs many times.

Alexander is also a major contributor to the Thunder's top defense. He contributed 208 "stealing + blocking" this season, ranking third in the league, second only to Spurs' Vampan Yama and Hawks' Daniels.

Alexander was elected as the regular season MVP this season, not only the choice of more media people, but also the support of more players. The Athletic previously conducted anonymous voting interviews with players, and 155 players conducted MVP votes. Alexander ranked first with 56.1% of the votes, while Jokic ranked second with 37.4%.

After being selected for the NBA All-First Team in the past two seasons, Alexander is eligible to sign an unprecedented four-year, $294 million super maximum salary renewal this summer. If the signing is completed, this will be the highest annual contract ($73.3 million) in the league's history.

NBA has been selecting the regular season MVP since the 1955-56 season. The player who won the most awards in history is Jabbar, who has been elected 6 times. Jordan and Russell tied for second place with five times. Chamberlain and James were tied for fourth place.

So far, only one person in the NBA has been elected MVP unanimously, and he is Curry of the Warriors. In the 2015-16 season, Curry averaged 30.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game, and won the scoring and steals king at the same time. The Warriors scored the best regular season record of 73 wins and 9 losses. In the end, Curry got all 131 first votes and was elected as the MVP.
