Pearce was born in Bury and started his career in Huddersfield. In 1973, he joined the Wolves and eventually played 111 games for the team.

Pearce appeared in the 1974 League Cup final at the Wolves' highest bright moment. In that game against Manchester City, when Phil Parkes was injured, he came on the bench to make a series of saves, helping the team win 2-1 and win the first League Cup championship trophy in team history.

In the 1976-77 season, Pierce helped Wolves successfully upgrade to the First Division as the main goalkeeper, and he helped the team successfully upgrade twice in his career. In 1979, Pierce left Wolves to join Barnsley in the third-tier league. In 1984, he retired from Blackpool, ending his career in the English Football League.
