Why do you need to hang the Nets under the basket? It doesn t seem to work?

Basketball

Friends who like to play basketball are definitely familiar with the Nets. Generally, on standard basketball stands, there are rope-woven Nets under the iron basket.

But when we shoot, we just need to shoot into the basket. So what is the function of the Nets hanging under the basket?

In fact, the Nets were not added later, but were born with the basket.

Although basketball is one of the hottest sports in the world today, and its popularity is second only to football, basketball has only been more than a hundred years since its invention.

In 1891, American James Naismith worked as a teacher in a Christian school. Massachusetts was home to a wealth of peaches, and children often played a game of throwing peaches into a peach basket. Inspired by this game, James invented basketball games in combination with the characteristics of sports such as football and hockey.

The earliest basketball was actually very pure, without so many rules and restrictions. The purpose of the two teams was to compete for the basketball and then try to throw the basketball into a rattan peach basket like a basket.

But there is a disadvantage to using peach baskets, which is that after each goal is scored, people need to climb up the ladder and take out the basketball in the basket, which is very troublesome.

Once, a student accidentally slipped the ladder while climbing up the ladder to get the ball, and fell down. For safety reasons, James then removed the bottom of the peach basket so that he could pick up the ball underground every time. From 1894, as the competition venue continued to improve, the game rules gradually increased, and the basket began to become standardized. It consisted of two iron rings, one large and one small, and then inlaid wooden boards around it, like a wooden barrel with no foundation.

But a wooden basket also has a problem, that is, the basketball can easily get stuck in the wooden barrel, causing the game to be unable to continue, so the wooden basket is optimized again.

By the beginning of the 20th century, wooden rebounds began to appear, and the baskets also began to use net-like structures, which looked very similar to today's baskets, except that the nets were made of barbed wire.

However, when athletes shoot, their palms are easily scratched by the nets made of barbed wire, so people later replaced barbed wire with ropes, gradually becoming their current form.

Although the Nets seem to be dispensable, just like when I was a child, many simple basketball hoops could not see the Nets at all, and it did not affect people's normal playing.

But for official games, the Nets are still very useful, such as helping the referee to determine whether to score a goal.

The goal is actually very fast, often in a moment, and the Nets' function is to slow down the basketball's speed after entering the basket and let the basketball pause here, so that you can see the basketball's movement trajectory more clearly.

Secondly, basketball generally only has one ball. After the slow-speed basketball falls to the ground, it will not bounce far away due to excessive force, otherwise the athletes will have to pick up the balls all over the field.

And another thing, if there is no Nets, the target of the bare basket is too small, and athletes may not be able to find the right goal when shooting from a long distance, but with the Nets, shooting becomes relatively easier.

These advantages of the Nets were probably discovered by people in the early days of the invention of basketball. Otherwise, the basket had been improved several times, but the Nets had always retained it.

Moreover, many people watch basketball games just to hear the "swish" sound after the basketball enters the basket, which is also a scene that many fans are crazy about.
