Chelsea accidentally abandons Argentina s new aid, who misses the Champions League roster

Football

Chelsea Club recently announced the official roster of 22 players in the new season's Champions League group stage. The most surprising thing is that Argentine attacking midfielder Faquento Bonanot, who just joined on loan from Brighton, failed to be shortlisted. This decision was quite shocking - just a few days ago, the young star said with anticipation that he would make his career debut in the Champions League.

This summer, Bonanot joined Chelsea on loan and was regarded as an important candidate to fill the long absence of Cole Palmer due to a groin injury. When joining, he said excitedly: "This is a big step in my career for me. Finally having the opportunity to step into the Champions League, this is the challenge I have always dreamed of."

However, reality gave him a heavy blow. In the Champions League "A-list" submitted by Chelsea, Bonanot's name was absent. What is even more puzzling is that England defender Levi Colville, who also suffered serious injuries and is expected to miss the entire season, was successfully selected.

In contrast, Chelsea has successfully completed the Champions League registration for many other new players introduced this summer, including Joao Pedro, Estevan William, Hoto, Dario Essugo, Jamie Gittens, Liam Delapp, and the highly-watched Alejandro Garnacho (will wear the No. 49 jersey). The reason why the club was so smooth in registration was that this summer's transfer window attracted more than 300 million pounds by selling players, setting a record for the income of a Premier League team selling players in a single transfer window.

What's more regrettable is that Bonanot even cannot enter the "B list". Currently, the list is only three people, Tequiri George, Romeo Lavia and Joshua Achimpon. According to UEFA regulations, the B list is limited to players born after January 1, 2003 and who have been playing for at least two consecutive years (or cumulative loans within three years will not exceed one year) since the age of 15.

Although Bonanot was born in December 2004 and fully meets the requirements, he did not join Brighton until January 2023 and failed to meet the conditions of "playing for two consecutive years in the same club." This means that he will not be eligible to be registered on the Champions League roster until January 2026 at the earliest.

However, UEFA has an additional regulation: for teams that advance to the knockout stage, the roster can be adjusted once before 23:00 on February 5, 2026, and up to three new players can be added. If Chelsea can qualify from the group stage, Bonanot will still have the chance to be re-listed - provided that his loan contract is extended and the club is willing to win a place for him.

Now, this Argentine star with a dream of the Champions League can only turn his focus to the Premier League and domestic cups, and strive to prove himself on a limited stage.
