Guardian: Israel will be banned from UEFA events, but may continue to participate in the World Cup qualifiers

Football

September 30th According to the British media Guardian, Israel is expected to be banned from participating in UEFA events, but may still be allowed to participate in the World Cup qualifiers.

According to the Guardian, UEFA is developing a relevant plan, which is expected to be voted by its executive committee this week. Under the scheme, Israel will only be banned from participating in events directly under UEFA. This means that the Israeli men's and women's national teams will be excluded from the UEFA Nations League, and Maccabi Tel Aviv will also be disqualified from the UEFA Europa League this season.

However, the World Cup is a FIFA event, and UEFA is only responsible for organizing the European qualifiers and schedule. Such arrangements are subject to “cooperation with FIFA” and must be approved by this global football governing body. The unilateral decision to exclude Israel from the World Cup qualifiers would be a complex decision at the political level, and it seems that UEFA is interested in avoiding this approach.

However, without a more comprehensive ban on Israel, UEFA will be in a special situation, both to allow Israel to participate in the World Cup qualifiers and to exclude it from other events.

If Israel is banned from participating in UEFA, the focus will return to FIFA. Last week, the United States said: "It will definitely do its best to stop any efforts to ban the Israeli national team from participating in the World Cup."
