Lyon holds retirement ceremony for youth training player and former Barcelona defender Umtiti, and kicks off before the game

September 20th News Before the start of today's Ligue 1 match between Lyon and Angers, Lyon paid tribute to Umtiti at home. Umtiti, who is only 31 years old, announced his retirement on Monday due to injuries and the news was announced to the public through an official statement.

Umtiti was born in Yaounde, Cameroon, but moved with his family to Lyon, France when he was two years old. At the age of 5, he entered the Lyon Youth Training Academy where he received systematic training. In January 2012, at the age of 18, he made his first appearance on behalf of the first team. In 2016, he transferred to Barcelona and was loaned to Lecce in the 2022-2023 season, and terminated his contract with Barcelona after the end of the season. He then joined Lille and spent the last two seasons of his career there.

Today, Lyon held a brief but touching tribute ceremony for Umtiti: the club presented him with his name, and fans on the scene expressed their respect with warm applause. Umtiti then held a kick-off ceremony before the game.
