May 16th News Recently, Alejandro Dominguez, President of the South American Football Federation, officially proposed at the FIFA annual conference that he hoped to increase the number of participating teams in the 2030 World Cup from 48 to 64.

This proposal has received widespread attention, as no World Cup has participated in more than 32 teams so far. "I hope we can be creative and actively participate, so that the whole world will be part of the biggest and most popular celebration on the planet. No one should be excluded in this celebration." The main host countries of the 2030 World Cup are Spain, Morocco and Portugal, while Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will also hold an opening match to pay tribute to the South American roots of the event. The proposal to expand to 64 teams is intended to involve more countries in this most important football event and increase the number of games in South America, but this will also bring greater organizational complexity.

At present, FIFA has not yet issued a formal opinion on this. FIFA did not show strong support in the preliminary proposal received a few months ago. If the expansion to 64 teams means that more than a quarter of the member associations will participate in the World Cup, and FIFA currently has a total of 211 member associations.
