Former Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer openly questioned why his former club sold McTominay last summer while defending his own criticized transfer decision.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now coaches Turkish giant Besiktas, who coached Manchester United for nearly three years from 2018 to 2021. The once prolific striker enjoyed and went through a series of peaks and troughs while coaching his beloved former club. Manchester United's performance has dropped significantly after he was appointed as permanent head coach, but Solskjaer still led United to second place in the 2020/21 season, and Ruben Amorin can only dream of this height this season.

The former Norwegian international was eventually kicked out of the coaching seat at Old Trafford four months after the start of the 2021/22 season because he failed to find the best player for United's summer franchise, namely Cristiano Ronaldo. However, as an avid fan, Solskjaer revealed his shock at the club's transfer event last summer, and he thought McTominay's departure from Naples was a particularly confusing decision.

"How can you sell Scott, it's beyond my scope," Solskjaer was stunned in an interview with BBC Sports. “Scott and Fred are with them, they’re the guys you’ll be wearing a hat every day and paying 100%.”

McTominay has been a regular at Solskjaer’s defensive midfielder, but he began to show off his offensive ability as Eric Tenhager’s tenure ended. The Scotland international scored 10 non-penalties for Manchester United in various competitions last season, surpassing the goals Bruno Fernandez, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial can boast.

The Manchester United youth training graduate continued to perform well in Serie A this season, scoring a double-digit goal in Antonio Conte's league leader Naples.

In addition to the arrival of Ronaldo and Jaden Sancho, Solskjaer's decision to approve Harry Maguire's record-breaking £80 million transfer has also been widely criticized. The former Manchester United manager is keen to praise the centre-back as a "leader and fighter."

"When I signed him, I never doubted that he walked into the door and he would be our captain," Solskjaer insisted. "There is another captain, Bruno (Fernandez). Both of them are top guys. Three and a half years after leaving Old Trafford, Solskjaer revealed that Maguire and Fernandez were one of the former players who had contacted him. "Those two and Victor (Lindelof) were probably the only people I heard after leaving the club," he admitted. "You want to give them the best. ”
