Post exclusive: Real Madrid general manager helps Fenway negotiate, Fenway is close to acquire Getafe

Hupu September 25th, the Daily Mail Liverpool famous reporter Dominic King reported that Fenway Sports Group has completed its due diligence on Getafe to assess the potential to include the club in its portfolio.

Fenway Sports Group's acquisition of Liverpool is about to celebrate its 15th anniversary, and they have long been eager to acquire another European football club.

In recent years, it has become common for Premier League teams to form a multi-club network, such as Manchester City's City Football Group, BlueCo Group, which owns Chelsea and Strasbourg, and Manchester United's cooperation with French team Nice through minority shareholder Ineus.

Liverpool had considered acquiring Ligue 1 team Toulouse in 2024, but the deal failed to advance due to bad situations.

FSG has commissioned Michael Edwards, Julian Ward (two former Liverpool sporting directors) and Pedro Max to assess appropriate targets. The three have evaluated more than 20 clubs in Europe, believing that these clubs have real growth potential.

Malaga was one of them, but after evaluating their financial situation, FSG gave up and looked for other alternatives.

They finally got in touch with Getafe after Real Madrid CEO Jose Angel Sanchez held informal talks with Getafe Club Chairman Angel Torres.

Getafe learned about Liverpool's interest in them while playing a friendly match with Hull City at MKM Stadium on August 2. A few days later, the FSG delegation flew to Spain to investigate Getafe's financial status and infrastructure.

It is understood that negotiations between FSG and Getafe, who is ranked sixth in La Liga, are progressing smoothly. Ward, who is proficient in Spanish and Portuguese, and Marquez, who has a chance to transfer to the Spanish club this summer, are the core figures of FSG.

Since FSG began trying to acquire other clubs, they have conducted due diligence on 25 clubs in Europe.

There is currently no indication of how much it will cost to acquire Getafe, and FSG's top executives in Boston are currently considering the next move.

If Fenway Group intends to advance, given their knowledge of Getafe, the deal is likely to be just a form. The Spanish club has been owned by local businessman Torres since 2002.

The deal is of great significance because Fenway Group has the potential to complete it: 15 years ago, they checked Liverpool's books and found that the club was on the verge of bankruptcy.

Liverpool have experienced such an extraordinary transformation over the past two decades, and they have built Liverpool into one of the largest clubs in the world, and now, if they want, they have enough financial resources to expand the club's roster.
